Arctic Powers Adopt Ilulissat Declaration

Following a meeting at Ilulissat, Greenland, hosted by Denmark, the five states having coastline on the Arctic Ocean – Canada, Denmark, Norway, The Russian Federation, and the United States of America – adopted the following declaration in respect of Arctic waters:

In addition to expected references to sovereignty and scientific methods for determining the extent of continental shelf, the declaration also refers to environmental responsibility and the risks faced by aboriginal peoples, and the nations commit to co-operative resolution of potentially overlapping claims in accordance with international law.
