The Government of Canada today announced that, as part of the National Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund, the Federal Government will contribute up to $43 million for upgrades at the Port of Montreal to “help ensure the already very busy port facilities can support growth and meet increasing demand”.

The government’s press release, styled as “The Harper Government”, also refers to expected increases from the Canada-European Free Trade Agreement (CETA), although this agreement has not been finalized or ratified in either jurisdiction.

Media reports indicate the work will continue through 2017, and allow the port to increase its cargo handling capabilities, increasing its processing from 1.7 million containers to 2.1 million. It will also create 2,500 full-time jobs.
