The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has loosened the insurance requirements for Canadian truckers operating in the USA, Today’s Trucker reports:

The rules formerly required insurance to be provided by an American insurer in each state in which the trucker operated, or by an American insurer with a PAU in each state to accept service and commit to providing the State minimum requirements.
At the request of the Canadian government, the rules were changed to permit Canadian insurers to underwrite the risk directly without the need for one or more US insurers to act as front-men. Although the State minima will still apply, regulation of the Canadian insurers will be by Canadian regulators.
The changes took effect on 2 August 2010.
